Exergaming

Q: What is Exergaming?
A: In short, it's where Video games meet sport... It's the combination of the verb "to exercise" and games. It's just video games where you move your body to play... increasing both the fun and usefulness of what you're doing! Exergaming (a portmanteau of "exercise" and "gaming") is a term used for video games that also provide exercise. Exergames have one element of exercise and one element of gaming. The "gaming" aspect is a short form for video gaming. "Exergames" sub divide into two main implementations, those with a game specifically designed to use an exercise input device and those implementations using a genre of, or a generic game. Games fit in to the category of entertainment, and similarly Exergames are a category of Exertainment (formed from "exercise" and "entertainment"). Exertainment includes one aspect of innovation or entertainment to an exercise work out.

Lightspace Play System:  Lightspace play’s exciting games get kids up and moving. Whether in single-player or multi-player mode, the games require players to actively participate. Lightspace Play is a revolutionary entertainment system that combines the latest display and interactive technologies to produce a recreational experience that will provide hours of fun for children and adults of all ages.

Players choose their game and difficulty level, and the Lightspace Play system takes it from there, sensing and responding to their every move and making the games unpredictable and challenging. Kids work up a sweat, and because they’re having fun, they keep coming back for more. Kids can easily meet their recommended 90 minutes of daily exercise without even realizing that they’re "working out."

Lightspace Play helps develop skills that traditional physical fitness programs develop: endurance, coordination, agility, and flexibility, as well as strategic thinking and memory. Kids would need to participate in several different sports to experience all these benefits. Lightspace Play has 11 games for the Play Floor and as kids move from one to the other, they improve different skills without breaking their rhythm or losing their motivation.

Adaptable to any age group.  Players can choose the games that are most interesting and appropriate. Game types range from simple to difficult, educational to competitive, and can involve one or multiple players. We can cater to your special event and transform the Lightspace® Play surface into a state of the art interactive dance floor, which can display different effects synchronized to music and react to dancers movements.

Ideal for birthday parties.
Lightspace Play provides an activity that all party guests can do together. Groups of friends can compete against or cooperate with one another in a wide variety of games.

Promotes healthy social interaction.
Most video games offer a solo experience. Even multi-player games usually require players to concentrate on the screen in front of them instead of the other players. Lightspace® Play activities are conducted on a surface and allow players to interact with one another. The nature of the experience fosters communication and healthy interaction.

Integrates physical activity and electronic entertainment.
The media has drawn a great deal of attention to the dangers associated with the increasing rate of obesity, especially among children. In contrast, physically interactive video games have made headlines recently as a popular and effective form of exercise. The combination of physical movement and the compelling nature of video games have led many formerly sedentary people to spend several hours a week engaging in aerobic activity and enjoying it. Lightspace® Play provides not only a multifaceted source of entertainment, but also a fun way to keep fit.

Makoto Sports Arena: The Makoto is a triangle, 8 feet from base to apex, with indestructible 6-ft. steel posts rising from each corner. Using your hands, feet, and/or staff, you respond to audio and visual prompts from each post. Your reaction time and accuracy (actually hitting the lighted area) are measured electronically, so you can compete with yourself or others. The speed of the prompts is easily adjusted for varying abilities.

The Makoto arena has been described as a cross between “Whack-A-Mole” and “Simon.” It’s a triangle with durable 6-ft. steel towers rising from each corner. The arena has a distance of 6’ between towers. Each tower is electronically wired to emit sounds and lights; the lights can occur randomly in any of 10 locations per tower, and there are four tones that correspond to the height of the target.

Using hands, feet, and/or staff, one responds to the audio prompt and attempts to hit the lighted area before the light goes off. Reaction time and accuracy (actually hitting the lighted area) are measured electronically, so one can compete with oneself or others. The speed of the prompts is easily adjusted for varying abilities.

In the Fitness program the target “on” times range from 3 seconds down to 3/4ths of a second. In the Therapeutic program the target “on” times range from 10 seconds down to just under one second. Games can include one, two or three towers depending upon the player’s visual and movement abilities. Most games involve one player at a time; however, 3 people can do single tower games simultaneously, and tag-team games for children can accommodate group PE classes. A typical individual workout is comprised of several games lasting anywhere from 1 to 4 minutes, depending upon one’s stamina.

Fun and Exciting Interactive Exergame Fitness with benefits that go beyond physical activity. The first interactive fitness equipment that is used to help kids with ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities and for autism therapy. It’s no wonder that schools, YMCAs and community recreation centers are anchoring their youth fitness facilities around the new Makoto arena!

But that’s not what the kids see. They just like the game because it’s exciting and they’re in the center of action. Every game is different. And whether you’re playing solo against the machine or with a team, the arena will challenge all with a heart-pounding workout.

Accuracy counts. In a standard, timed game the arena scores how many targets were hit in the allotted time and also gives an average reaction time. Or a player can challenge their focus and concentration skills by playing “Sudden Death.” Here the game ends when a target is missed.

Dance Dance Revolution
DDR – Dance Dance Revolution is a popular video dance craze that has been documented as a welcome solution to youth obesity. Users stomp, slide, spin, and dance on our platforms to various dance programs while burning calories, earn points or following a workout mode. The DDR System is a perfect solution for group settings.
According to Wikipedia, “many news outlets have reported how playing DDR can be good aerobic exercise; some regular players have reported weight loss of 10–50 pounds.  In one example, a player found that including DDR in her day-to-day life resulted in a loss of 95 pounds. Another example would be Matthew Keene's account of losing upwards of 150 pounds.  Although the quantity of calories burned by playing DDR have not been measured, the amount of active movement required to play implies that DDR provides at least some degree of healthy exercise.  Many schools use DDR as a physical education activity in gym, and in Norway, DDR has even been registered as an official sport.  We can help you track estimated calories burned.
